n8n is a workflow automation tool aimed at technical users. It combines a visual node-based editor with the ability to write code, and can be self-hosted for free (Community Edition) or used as a managed cloud service.
n8n sits between no-code and code: you build workflows by connecting nodes on a canvas, but can drop into JavaScript or Python whenever you need to. It has become popular for AI workflows and agents, with native nodes for LLMs and vector stores, and it connects to hundreds of apps plus any HTTP API.
Its defining feature is deployment flexibility. The Community Edition is free, open/fair-code software you self-host with unlimited executions, paying only for your server. n8n Cloud is the managed option, billed per workflow execution, where one execution is a single run of an entire workflow regardless of how many nodes it contains, so multi-step workflows don't cost more per run than simple ones.
Cloud has no permanent free tier (a 14-day trial exists). Starter is €20/month annually (2,500 executions) and Pro €50/month (10,000 executions), both with unlimited users and workflows. A self-hosted Business plan (€667/month annually) adds SSO and Git sync; Enterprise is custom.
