Supabase is an open-source backend platform. Each project gets a full Postgres database plus authentication, file storage, auto-generated APIs, edge functions and realtime subscriptions, so you can build an app backend without running servers.
Supabase gives every project a real Postgres database, not a proprietary store, and layers the services most apps need on top: email and social authentication, file storage, instant REST and GraphQL APIs, serverless edge functions, realtime subscriptions and vector search (pgvector) for AI. Being open source, it can also be self-hosted.
Pricing is a hybrid of a fixed monthly plan and metered usage, billed per organization rather than per project. Paid plans include $10 a month in compute credits (enough for one Micro instance), then compute is billed per project by the hour. Database size, egress, storage and monthly active users bill as overages beyond included quotas.
Free gives two projects that pause after a week of inactivity. Pro ($25/org) is the production default; Team ($599/org) adds compliance and governance; Enterprise is custom.

Supabase is an excellent backend platform, especially for modern SaaS and Next.js applications. I’ve been using Supabase for the last 1.5 years. I started using it as a complete beginner, and now I’m able to manage most things on my own. The interface is easy to understand, although new users might find it a little difficult at the beginning. Overall, Supabase provides enough resources to start with hobby projects and gradually scale up to building and managing high-end projects.
