Metabase is a business intelligence platform. It lets anyone explore data, build charts and dashboards, and ask questions of a database, either through a point-and-click interface or SQL, without needing a data team for every request.
Metabase is one of the most widely adopted open-source BI tools, used by 60,000+ companies for internal analytics and embedded dashboards. It connects to 20+ databases, offers a no-code query builder alongside a SQL editor, and lets teams build dashboards, set alerts and share insights. It's known for being genuinely usable by non-analysts.
The open-source edition (AGPL) is free to self-host and covers nearly everything except embedded analytics; the catch is you run the infrastructure. Commercial features, like SSO, row/column-level permissions and customer-facing embedding, require a paid plan (and, for embedding a modified Metabase, a commercial licence).
Pricing on the cloud plans is a base fee plus per-user charges. Open Source is free (self-hosted). Starter is $100/month (5 users included, +$6/user) with managed hosting. Pro is $575/month (10 users, +$12/user) adding SSO, granular permissions and embedded analytics. Enterprise is custom (from ~$20,000/year). A Metabot AI add-on and annual discounts are available.
