Datadog is a monitoring and observability platform. It brings infrastructure metrics, application performance monitoring (APM), logs, real-user monitoring, security and dozens of other products into one place, so teams can see and troubleshoot their whole stack.
Datadog is one of the most comprehensive observability platforms available. Its agent collects metrics from hosts, containers and cloud services; APM traces requests across services; Log Management centralises logs; and further products cover real-user monitoring, synthetics, database monitoring, network performance, security and more, all correlated in shared dashboards.
That breadth comes with a modular, usage-based pricing model that catches teams off guard. You pay separately for each product: Infrastructure per host, APM per host (and APM requires a paired Infrastructure plan), Logs per GB ingested plus per indexed event, and so on. Hosts are counted hourly and billed on the 99th-percentile (high-water-mark) count, so autoscaling can inflate bills.
A free tier covers up to 5 hosts with 1-day retention. Paid tiers (Pro, Enterprise) and per-GB log rates layer up from there, with most real deployments combining several products.
